“In Deep Snow” wins Bradt/Independent on Sunday travel writing competition

Wilma and Rapin

I am delighted to have won the Bradt/Independent on Sunday travel writing competition 2013, with my article “In Deep Snow” – a story of how an attempt to break a fjord horse to harness ended in disaster while I was living in Arctic Finland last winter. (Wilma, the offending horse, can be seen on the right in the image above).

My article will be published in the Independent on Sunday’s travel section this weekend – please pick up a copy if you can, and I will also post the cutting online on Monday.

The prize is a week-long trip for two to Istria, courtesy of the Croatian Tourist Board and a commission to write about it for the Independent on Sunday. I can’t wait.

Cal, that is fantastic! i entered the Guardian travel writing competition years ago and I got talking to the then current winner, John Oates, when i met him in Pret a Manger in South Kensington. i had been to Explore 2007 and had attended one of Jonathan lorie’s travel writing workshops and one by Hilary Bradt. i’ll ask Mike to buy an Independent when he goes to church later. Well done!

Thanks Patricia! I’m really pleased. My piece about Hetta will be in the Telegraph this winter (I think in an issue at Christmas time or thereabout) x

i’ve told Anna and Ciara and they can spread the news. the horses looked a bit like Minna’s from across the road from Anna’s! Ivalo was where we flew into for Anna’s wedding in 2003. i’ve read a bit of your story online – great writing. As far as I can remember, Jon Oates got a commission that time to write a guide book on some foreign place he was about to travel to. i kept in touch with him for just a short while afterwards. His winning story was about Lithuania. i’ll keep a look out for the Hetta story. it was great having the group here last weekend and they’ve all been in touch since then. i’m glad you met up in London with Carmen, Meike and Raya.

All our reminiscing over lunch made me very homesick for Hetta!

This is a stunning piece of writing, Cal.
