I am a message

I found a notebook behind the sofa. It reads

THIS IS A LIST: THE FINNS DRINK MORE COFFEE THAN ANY OTHER NATION.

A HUSKY WEIGHS AROUND 20KG WHEREAS A WOLF WEIGHS 100KGS+.

GEE MEANS RIGHT AND HAW MEANS LEFT IN HUSKY.

PASI [Ikonen, Anna’s husband] WAS AN ADVENTURE RACER AND CAN COVER 1000KM ON FOOT IN A WEEK.

THE PETROL STATION IN ENONTEKIO HAS POSTCARDS OF THE PETROL STATION IN 1984.

THE ONLY BAR IN TOWN IS A KARAOKE BAR ON FRIDAYS.

NOBODY LOCKS UP THEIR BIKES.

TOGO IS MY FAVOURITE DOG ON THE FARM AND HE IS NAMED AFTER A FAMOUS RACE DOG.

TOMORROW IS JUHANNUS PAIVA OR MIDSUMMERS DAY WHICH IS CELEBRATED ON THE 23RD JUNE AS OPPOSED TO THE 21ST.

I WON’T SEE THE MOON UNTIL SEPTEMBER

All of these things are true, except that today is the 11th December and while I can see the moon any time I want, the sun won’t rise again for a month.

Ten things I’ve learnt from life in sub-zero conditions

  • Below -20°C, the insides of your nostrils will crackle with frost and any hair left uncovered will gain a grey sheen, as though you have aged fifty years in a few minutes.
  • Below -30°C, nipping out the house for only a few seconds without jacket, hat and gloves becomes extremely uncomfortable. Cold metal feels like burning on contact, even through magic gloves. Eyelashes will clump with icy droplets.
  • Bowls of water will freeze solid in minutes, so to encourage the dogs to drink quickly we must mix meat or dry food into a watery ‘soup’ and feed it to them throughout the day.
  • Fingers and toes may be cold to the touch and throb, but it’s not until you have difficulty in touching thumb to pinky finger that you have to worry. Continue reading
