What We're Reading

1. Full circle: Classic books, told in tweet format, compiled in a Penguin paperback. Oedipus: "PARTY IN THEBES!!! Nobody cares I killed old dude, plus this woman is all over me. Total MILF.''

2. Early tribute to the chequebook, which is to be phased out. "I have the stubs for almost every single cheque I've ever written, which tell a more evocative story than any of my diaries: my student digs, my wedding dress, my Paula Rego lithograph, our owl plates, a Maine Coon kitten."

3. Blueprints database for sci-fi vehicles/ships. Hours of fun.

4. Highlights from the National Geographic's photo competition.

What We're Reading

1. Robert Yates reports from inside "Broken Britain" – his old home patch in Walton, Liverpool. Hopeful and crushing at once.

2. Heat portraits on show – I'm rather looking forward to this. "Celebs get zits too!"-type papping aside, Heat has been responsible for some creative portraiture.

3. Man in 23-year coma was conscious all along

4. I took my little cousin to the science museum this weekend and we got completely obsessed with this great game, Launchball.

What We're Reading

1. Photo-gallery of China's 56 recognised ethnicities. Creepily like 'It's a Small World'. H/t The

2. The average colour of the universe: "a conditionally perceived shade of beige"

3. 10-year old girl tasered 'who refused to take shower'

4. Data-viz: comparing Obama's foreign policy speeches.

5. Where have you been all my life? #10: the selector mug. These would have saved my bacon so many times on work experience (once when I was on placement with the BBC I made everyone tea and coffee with cold water. True story. In my defence there were two, very similar, kettles)

What We're Reading

1. I went to see Pixar's Up this weekend: my favourite moment.

2. Lolcat of the day. And more cats do the funniest things.

3. The economic upsides of hell.

4. Darren from LinkMachineGo knew it was Brooke Magnanti all along. And while we're on the subject of Belle de Jour, here's a (barely sensical) blog from the ex-boyfriend who outed her.

5. FoI Friday from David Higgerson makes for great reading.

What We're Reading

1 Violent movies: better for society than you might think. h/t Tyler Cowen

2 Gift ideas for nerds #29: the Tauntaun sleeping bag.

3 Brilliant collection of British ambassadors' valedictory dispatches (audio) (written extracts). Lord Moran on Canada: "Anyone who is even moderately good at what they do – in literature, the theatre, skiing or whatever – tends to become a national figure, and anyone who stands out at all from the crowd tends to be praised to the skies and given the Order of Canada at once" (1984)

What We're Reading

More words of wisdom from David Banks. "They don't call it plagiarism anymore, they call it aggregation – that's the word."

Caroline Flyn – 16 November 2009

What We're Reading

1. David banks on the future of online media – spot on, I'd say.

2. I was going to spend some time making a fun round up of unreasonable nerdy tattoos. But I see I've been beaten to it. Scroll to the end for an amazing Spiderman tattoo. Also fond of the UV skeleton, invisible in normal daylight.

3. Matthew Paris imparts some invaluable life advice. (Particularly taken with "remember that no male, however indifferent to your charms, is actually offended by a pass being made at him, though he may be a little startled").

4. …which reminds me of the 'wear sunscreen' classic from the Chicago Tribune, put to music and graphics by Baz Luhrmann.

5. Do musicians fare better in a world of illegal file-sharing?

5. Mexico/U.S Border Disturbance Art Project

6. Luckless Indian sues Lynx for lack of 'Lynx effect'. "I used it for seven years but no girl came to me."

Caroline Flyn – 11 November 2009
